Odoo vs Tally (TallyPrime): An Honest UAE Comparison

Tally is the UAE's SME accounting standard — and for single-location bookkeeping it's hard to beat. This page is for businesses outgrowing it: where Tally caps out, what an integrated ERP adds, and how to decide honestly.

When to choose which

Choose Tally (TallyPrime) when:

  • You're a single-location SME and accounting, VAT filing and basic stock are genuinely all you need.
  • Budget is tight and a low one-time/low-annual licence cost is the priority over breadth.
  • Your accountant already knows Tally cold and your processes don't span sales, warehouse and production teams working live together.
  • You're not yet ready for an ERP project and just need reliable, fast bookkeeping for the FTA.

Choose Odoo when:

  • You're running Tally plus a separate CRM, e-commerce, inventory or HR tool — and paying in double data entry and Excel reconciliation.
  • Sales, warehouse and accounts need live, multi-user, cloud access from different sites.
  • You manufacture, run projects, or sell online and need those operations connected to the books automatically.
  • You operate multiple entities and want one database for consolidation, multi-currency and multiple VAT registrations.
  • You want UAE compliance (VAT/FTA, corporate tax, WPS payroll, e-invoicing readiness) inside the same system that runs operations.

FAQ

Is Odoo more expensive than Tally?

On the licence alone, yes — Odoo runs around AED 114 per user per month (billed annually) versus Tally's much lower one-time or annual cost, and a single-location bookkeeping business will spend less on Tally. The honest comparison is at the stack level: Odoo replaces Tally plus the separate CRM, e-commerce, inventory and HR tools you'd otherwise run, with implementation fixed-price from about AED 25,000. Compare it to your full toolset, not to Tally alone.

Does Odoo handle UAE VAT, corporate tax and FTA requirements like Tally does?

Yes. Odoo ships a UAE-localized chart of accounts with FTA-aligned tax grids, handles 5% VAT and corporate tax fields, supports WPS payroll, and issues structured, API-ready invoices for e-invoicing readiness as the mandate phases in. Tally is also fully VAT-capable and widely used for FTA filing — the difference is that in Odoo the VAT is a by-product of operations (sales and stock feed the books automatically) rather than a separate accounting silo.

We've used Tally for years — is it hard to move to Odoo, and do we lose our VAT history?

You don't lose your VAT history: filed returns stay with the FTA, and you keep your Tally data in a read-only archive for the legal retention period (at least five years). The move is a structured project, not a one-click import — masters, open balances and PDCs are mapped and cleansed first. We cut over at a VAT-period boundary and keep invoice numbering continuous so the audit trail reads as one unbroken series. Tally-trained accountants typically adapt within weeks.

What can Odoo do that Tally can't?

Tally records the invoice after a deal; it has no real CRM or sales pipeline, no e-commerce, limited manufacturing/MRP and projects, and limited multi-user cloud access and workflow automation. Odoo covers all of these in one system: quotation-to-order pipeline, online store, manufacturing and project management, multi-warehouse inventory with barcode and batch tracking, and automation across the business — with operations feeding accounting in real time instead of being entered twice.

If Tally works fine for us today, why would we switch?

You shouldn't switch just for the sake of it. If Tally still fits — single location, accounting and basic stock, a couple of users — stay on it; it's a fine tool and the cheaper option. Businesses usually move when they hit Tally's ceiling: they've bolted on a separate CRM or e-commerce, teams can't get live access from different sites, consolidation lives in Excel, or manufacturing and projects have outgrown spreadsheets. That's the point where one integrated system pays back the higher licence cost.
